Carrie French is a contemporary painter whose work reflects her fascination with cities and travel and leaves the impression of buildings, grids, and skylines, while her love of nature is evident in free-flowing abstract landscapes. A native Montanan, after graduating with a B.A. in Painting from Montana State University, she spent years living in various cities, and after a three-year stint in New York, Carrie found a renewed appreciation for her hometown, and now thrives, living and creating in Bozeman.
Working in oil paint and frequently incorporating collage, each work begins with gestural marks, often without a preconceived plan, and develops through building color, while allowing spaces of thin, transparent areas. For Carrie, discovery is essential in the process, and she revels in the surprises that arise while painting.
Artist Statement
My paintings wander along the border between representation and abstraction and reflect my wonder of the world, both natural and human-made.
